Freedom to use the Internet, but . . . A group of Jehovah's Witnesses set up the website at http://www.mptech.mb.ca in 1996 to sell computer software, but soon expanded it to provide free news and items of interest to JWs. On their "Frequently Asked Questions" page they answered the question,
"is the Society aware of your web site?": "Yes they are. . . . They have no problem with us being on the internet and passing on items of interest to our brothers and sisters. They did have some advice about certain copyright issues which we immediately followed and made the needed adjustments on our site."Now however - just as we were going to press - the site's home page featured this startling announcement: "in communicating with the Society on various aspects of this web site we have received much fine counsel and admonition from them. Based on these discussions we have decided to close this web site on August 10, 1997." |
