The August 15, 1997 Watchtower says Jesus "never claimed to be God Almighty" and that "your salvation depends upon having the correct understanding." (pg. 6)
What is the correct understanding? Most churches teach that Christ is not the Father but that he is indeed God. The Watchtower Society teaches that Jesus was the first angel created, God's "chief angel, or archangel&" (February 1, 1991 Watchtower, pg. 17) and that "the first spirit person God made was like a firstborn son to him" - 1982 booklet Enjoy Life on Earth Forever!, page 14
What does the Bible say? Hebrews 1:4-5 makes it clear that Jesus is not "one of the angels" but is far superior to them.
And the accounts at John 8:58-59 and 10:30-33 (NIV) indicate that his listeners - even hostile listeners& - understood who he claimed to be. "'I tell you the truth,' Jesus answered, 'before Abraham was born, I am!' At this, they picked up stones to stone him" for the blasphemy of claiming to be God. And later, when he spoke on the subject again, they sought to stone him, "for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.'"
